Greens gain 11.5% in Lewisham, and double vote in Norwich South

6 May 2005

Greens have gained "spectacular" success in Norwich South and Lewisham Deptford, and increased their average vote share in seats contested to 3.4% (162 results logged so far).

In Lewisham Deptford, Green candidate Cllr Darren Johnson AM increased the Green Party vote share from 6.5% to 11.1%, narrowly missing out on third place to the Tories by just over 1% and second place to the Lib Dems by just 6%.

Cllr Darren Johnson comments: "This is a spectacular result for the Greens - voters are increasingly turning away from mainstream "pollute and privatise" politics and choosing the radical, principled alternative at the ballot box."

In Norwich South, Cllr Adrian Ramsay campaigned against top-up fees and anti-terror laws in Charles Clarke's constituency, to more than double the Green vote share, polling 7.3% in total.

There has been a modest increase in vote share in most other seats, but a small squeeze in some marginals. The Party has scored over the 5% mark - at which the £500 'deposit' is returned - in 23 constituencies so far (compared with 10 in 2001), mainly in London, places with Green Principal Authority Councillors and in Edinburgh where we have Members of the Scottish Parliament.
