Brent and Harrow Green Parties fought a vigorous campaign and we thank the Green voters of Brent and Harrow for coming out in greater numbers than ever before. We polled over 10,000 in the constituency, several thousand more than last time (45% more) - putting us up there with the three main parties and well ahead of another four. We also increased our percentage vote share in the only marginal seat to change hands in London (unlike the Lib Dems). Across London, the Greens gained over 200,000 votes on the List - securing two Assembly members (and the Lib Dems lost two).

Borough Elections 2006

We thank the 7,000 electors of Brent who cast their vote for the Greens in the 2006 local elections. We hope to honour their votes by renewing our commitment to getting Brent's first Green councillors in 2010. Across London, the Greens returned 12 councillors, with breakthroughs in Lewisham (6), Camden (2), Hackney (1), Islington (1), Southwark (1), and Lambeth (1) (see). Nationally, the Greens now have over 100 councillors - from Brighton and Oxford to Norwich and Lancaster.

Posted 7 May 2006. Results by ward and candidate here.

Synopsis: The Greens stood at least one candidate in every Brent ward for the first time ever. The Green vote share across Brent as a whole averaged 10% (after calculating the average per candidates' party), from 4% of voters in Alperton to 20% of those in Kensal Green.

Our combined vote in Brent at this local election was 8,120 - which represents about 7,000 Green voters across Brent. Three Green candidates came within 50% of the vote required to return a councillor in the wards of Kensal Green, Mapesbury and Queens Park (on declared result).

Brief analysis: The Green vote has held up well in both constituencies. In Brent East (our local target constituency), the percentage change since the Sept 2003 by-election is as follows: LibDem +8.4, Lab +5.1, Con -5.9, Green -0.1. The 5.9 drop in conservative vote is probably indicative of just how fierce the contest had become. Some votes were undoubtedly cast as if in a two-horse tactical race. The 5.1 gain in Lab vote did little to recover their lost ground since 2001 (still representing a 24.4 point drop on 2001). Our congratulations to the Lib Dems and Sarah Teather on this remarkable consolidation of their 2003 victory (36.9 point gain on 2001) and our commiserations to all the other parties and candidates. Our respect to every single constituent who voted Green at this election - do not despair, we're in this for the long haul.

On the top-up PR ballot, Jenny Jones and Darren Johnson were re-elected as London-wide Assembly members. The European Results, available for Brent and Harrow as distinct boroughs, were 7.24% and 5.56% (PR). Jean Lambert was re-elected for the London Region by an increased margin.

Less than 100 extra votes would have been needed to keep our deposit!

Within London boroughs/constituencies, we have significantly improved our position over the last 3 years compared to other local parties. In 1999, the Brent and Harrow Green vote was well below the London average and the Brent East vote was only slightly above average. In 2000, the Brent and Harrow vote was close to average. In 2001, the Brent East vote was well above average and Simone came 7th out of 34 candidates.

European Parliament elections 10 June 1999

The European elections were held under proportional representation for the first time in the UK last year.  Despite having fewer votes nationwide than in the 1989 election, two greens were elected to the European Parliament: Jean Lambert form the London Region and Caroline Lucas form the South East region.  In London, the relatively modest  vote of 7.67 % gained us the last of the 10 seats allocated, partly because smaller parties split the vote.

As can be seen from the table below, only in Brent East was the Green vote higher than the London average.  This may reflect the fact that there was relatively more Green Party activity in the area.

This suggests that there are 'easy' gains to be made across the Brent and Harrow constituencies and that the Green vote could be a lot higher.

 Kilburn by-election 11 March 1999

Candidate Rob Whitley polled 7.6 % of votes cast, putting us in third place, behind Labour and Conservatives.  Large parts of the ward were leafleted and canvassed - the response was generally very good.

Unfortunately Labour supporters were also out in force and they achieved a large majority.
